Service Description

Assists cancer patients with:

  • Either gas costs or shuttle/taxi service for travel to medical appointments
  • Funding to hospital outpatient hostels for those qualified applicants that need to stay in Halifax or Sydney during treatment
  • Will cover the cost of a travel escort if a patient cannot attend a medical appointment on their own
  • Cost of ostomy supplies if not covered by private healthcare insurance

Site Description

Administers Nova Scotia Medical Services Insurance (MSI) programs including medicare, pharmacare, optometry, and prostheses on behalf of the Government of Nova Scotia's Department of Health and Wellness.

Eligibility

Cancer patients with gross annual family income less than $25,500 per year. If income was above $25,500 last year and has now decreased to below this limit, application can be made with proof of current income

Must have a valid Nova Scotia Health Card * Cannot be receiving transportation assistance for medical appointments from any other government service * Please contact Medavie for further details on eligibility

Complete and return an application form. Application forms can be found in each cancer centre or satellite clinic in Nova Scotia, or are available through a Cancer Patient Navigator or Social Worker at each hospital.

Documents Required:
Nova Scotia health card * Proof of annual income

Fees:
No fees for program. However, patients may be required to pay upfront for services and then apply to be reimbursed.
