Direct Family Support for Children (DFSC) and Enhanced Family Support for Children (EFSC) provides funding to enable families to support their child with a disability at home.

DFSC and EFSC provides funding for the purchase of respite services to assist with scheduled breaks for family caregivers. An enhanced funding component may be available for children and families who meet EFSC eligibility criteria.

Provides individualized funding to participants living at home with their families or who live independently with support from their families or personal support networks.

The funding is used to:

• Purchase supports specific to a participant's disability-related needs and goals
• Promote the participant's independence, self-reliance, and social inclusion
• Offer an alternative to, prevent, or delay a participant's placement in a DSP-funded residential support option

A community based option that provides funding for hours of support services from a service provider, based on the assessed needs and circumstances of an eligible participant who is semi-independent and requires support to live on their own.

Helps seniors access programs, services and organizations to help them age well at home. Can help connect seniors to services such as:

• Fitness programs
• Healthy and affordable meals
• Reliable transportation
• Housekeeping services
  

Offers practical in-home support for seniors, such as grocery delivery, pharmacy delivery and light home maintenance.

• Delivery of Prepaid Grocery or Pharmacy Items: Volunteers can pick-up prepaid grocery and prescription orders
• Light Home Maintenance: Offers free labour to complete small tasks, such as installing doorknobs, toilet paper holders, hanging pictures or mirrors, assembling furniture, etc.
  

The Seniors Care Grant is an annual grant program that helps seniors with a low income with the cost of household services, healthcare services and home heating. Grants are up to $750 for each household.

Seasonal program * Applications open on September 1, 2024 and close on March 31, 2025

Eligible household and healthcare services and home heating costs include services that help seniors stay in their homes including:

• Cooking and meal preparation (excluding the cost of food)
• Grocery and meal delivery (excluding the cost of food)
• Healthcare services for health and wellness (like foot care, physiotherapy and mental health support)
• Home heating (like furnace oil, natural gas, propane, firewood, wood pellets and electricity)
• Home heating repairs and regular heating maintenance
• Home cleaning, organizing and help with downsizing or moving
• Laundry
• Medication and prescription delivery (excluding the cost of medications and prescriptions)
• Outdoor work (like driveway maintenance, landscaping, lawn care, snow removal, stacking wood and tree removal)
• Phone, cell phone and internet services (excluding the cost of devices)
• Small home repairs (like windows, doors, roof, plumbing, electrical, decks, fencing, siding and painting)
• Transportation (like taxis, ride shares, shuttles and other methods of transportation) and public and community transit (like the bus, Access-A-Bus and ferry)

Ineligible household and healthcare services include the cost of:

• Devices (like phones, cellphones, computers, laptops and tablets)
• Food
• Medical and assistive devices (like eyeglasses, dentures, dental implants, braces, orthopedic supports and personal alerts)
• Medications, prescriptions, supplements and vitamins

• Assistance with personal care
• Respite care
• In home services including: Light Housekeeping * Laundry * Meal Preparation

• Home care providers
• Companion/personal support/errands
• Downsizing/decluttering/house cleaning
• Grocery delivery and shopping services
• Meal programs and prepared meal delivery
• Mobile services (such as blood collection, dental hygiene, foot care, hair services)
• Personal alert services and home health equipment
• Respite care
• Transportation
• Other support services

Provides regular, one-to-one assistance and companionship for a person who is blind or partially sighted.

Matches are made between someone with sight loss and someone with sight who lives close to their home, school or work.

Participants visit once a week for a couple of hours to assist with tasks like reading, errands (like groceries and shopping), walking, and socializing.

Home-based program that improves in-home safety and function so that people over the age of 65 having difficulty with activities of daily living can remain independent in their own homes longer.

The team consists of an occupational therapist, a nurse and a handy-worker who will work with the individual over a period of four to five months to identify and address areas in their home and in their day-to-day life that can be improved so they can remain in their own home safely.

Each follow-up visit will build on the one before, focused on increasing the individual's quality of life, safety and independence at home by learning new skills, exercises and how to work with additional tools/equipment/home modifications and repairs.

Services include:

• Recommending exercises to improve strength and mobility
• Reviewing medications
• Rearranging furniture
• Removing carpets
• Moving frequently used items so they are easier to reach
• Securing shelves
• Improving lighting
• Installing grab bars, raised toilet seats, lever faucets and lever door handles
• Repairing steps and other items

The program is offered by VON in partnership with Nova Scotia's Department of Seniors and Long-Term Care and on behalf of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing.

• Home support (such as personal care, respite and essential housekeeping)
• Nursing (such as dressing changes, catheter care, intravenous therapy and palliative care)

Supports eligible Nova Scotians with care needs by providing them with funding each month to help with the costs of paying for private home support services (e.g., personal care, respite, meal preparation, and essential housekeeping).

Individuals living in Mi'kmaw communities have access to Continuing Care services through provincially and federally funded programs.

Eligibility for provincial Continuing Care services varies, depending on whether a person lives in a Mi'kmaw community and whether they are a Registered Status individual under the federal Indian Act and therefore have access to similar federally funded services.
