Service Description

• COVID-19 UPDATE – Service Canada urges you not to visit Service Canada Centres unless absolutely necessary • Ask Service Canada to help you with the following programs by using eService Canada service request form:

  • Employment Insurance (EI)
  • Canada Pension Plan (CPP), Old Age Security (OAS), Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) benefits
  • Social Insurance Numbers (SIN)
  • Immediate request for a Passport Service

Do not come to a Service Canada Centre if you: Have any COVID-19 related symptoms such as fever, cough or difficulty breathing • Have had contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the past 14 days • Are required to self-isolate or quarantine by public health authorities

Provides up to 15 weeks of income replacement for eligible claimants who are unable to work because of illness, injury or quarantine.


Benefits are payable to those people who are unable to work because of sickness, injury or quarantine but who would otherwise be available for work if not for their incapacity due to medical reasons

Individuals may be entitled to receive EI sickness benefits if they:

• Are employed in insurable employment
• Meet the specific criteria for receiving EI sickness benefits
• See normal weekly earnings reduced by more than 40%
• Have accumulated at least 600 hours of insurable employment during the qualifying period

Documents Required

A medical certificate that attests to the incapacity, the start date, the probable duration of the incapacity and signed by a doctor or other medical practitioner • See website for more information • Social Insurance Number • Mother's maiden name • Mailing and residential addresses, including the postal codes • Complete banking information • Names and addresses of all employers worked for in the last 52 weeks, as well as the dates of employment and the reasons for separation from these employers • Detailed version of the facts, if quit or dismissed from any job in the last 52 weeks • Dates (Sunday to Saturday) and earnings for each of the highest paid weeks of insurable earnings in the last 52 weeks or since the start of the last EI claim, whichever is the shorter period
