Service Description
A provincial program that helps eligible Nova Scotia residents undergoing cancer treatment with assistance for costs related to boarding, transportation, and ostomy supply needs including:
- Either gas costs or shuttle/taxi service for travel to medical appointments
- Funding to hospital outpatient hostels for those qualified applicants that need to stay in Halifax or Sydney during treatment
- The cost of a travel escort if a patient cannot attend a medical appointment on their own
- Cost of ostomy supplies if not covered by private healthcare insurance
Eligibility
Cancer patients with gross annual family income less than $35,000 per year
Must have a valid Nova Scotia health card • Cannot be receiving transportation assistance for medical appointments from any other government service • Please contact Medavie for further details on eligibility
Application Process
Complete and return an application form • Application forms can be found in each cancer centre or satellite clinic in Nova Scotia, or are available through a cancer patient navigator or social worker at each hospital

Nova Scotia health card • Proof of annual income
Fees
No fees for program • However, patients may be required to pay upfront for services and then apply to be reimbursed
